ich komme aus einer großen kubanischen familie, die im textilgeschäft tätig war. so bin ich zwischen unmengen von stoffen aus den 50er jahren, alten amerikanischen modemagazinen und vergilbten schnittmusterbögen für kleider und pettycoats aufgewachsen. wahrscheinlich erwachte deshalb schon früh meine große leidenschaft für die mode. bereits im alter von sechs jahren habe ich das lieblingskleid meiner mutter in all seine einzelteile zerlegt, nur um zu erforschen, wie es aufgebaut ist. ich habe es dann natürlich wieder neu zusammengenäht – meine arme mama war davon aber ganz und gar nicht begeistert. das hat sich dann später gott sei dank geändert, als ich mitte der 1990er jahre mehrere nationale preise und internationale mode-designwettbewerbe gewann und schließlich chef-designer im modehaus "la maison" in havanna wurde, der bis heute wichtigsten modeinstitution in kuba. um meine karriere international ausrichten zu können, ging ich 1999 nach europa. hier arbeitete ich freiberuflich für verschiedene modehäuser. dann hat mich mein bester freund, jorge gonzález zu sich nach hamburg eingeladen. die stadt hat mir gleich so gut gefallen, dass ich beschloss zu bleiben und zusammen mit volker krüger das label bénédí couture zu gründen. im jahr 2005 habe ich dann den renommierten "bunte-new-faces-award" gewonnen und war für den "mtv-fashion-award" nominiert. mit meinem label bénédí designe ich seit 2008 auch ready-to-wear, vom stil her immer im spannungsfeld zwischen kubanischer emotionalität und deutscher sachlichkeit. die italienische modekammer (camera nazionale della moda italiana) hat mich 2009/10 unter die vielversprechendsten fashion-newcomer weltweit gewählt. ich freue mich, dass ich heute einige besondere menschen zu meinen kunden zählen darf. //
vengo de una gran familia cubana que solía tener negocios de textil. así que crecí entre telas de los años cincuenta, viejas revistas de moda international con láminas amarillentas de vestidos y pieles. esa es probablemente la razón por la cual surgió mi gran pasión por la moda que se despertó desde muy temprano, a la edad de seis años desbaraté el vestido favorito de mi madre en piezas, sólo para descubrir cómo se hizo. por supuesto, lo cosí de nuevo, mi pobre madre no estuvo nada contenta al respecto. pero gracias a dios logré que cambiara su opinión a mediados de los años 90, ganando varios premios nacionales e internacionales de diseño y finalmente presentando mi trabajo como diseñador de la casa de moda "la maison" en la habana que era la institución más importante de cuba en ese momento. para poder orientar mi carrera internacionalmente, decidí emigrar a europa en 1999. aquí trabajé como diseñador independiente para varias casas de moda. entonces mi mejor amigo, jorge gonzález, me invitó a hamburgo. me gustó tanto la ciudad que decidí quedarme aquí y comenzar mi propia marca de alta costura. en 2005, gané el prestigioso "bunte-new-faces-award" y fui nominado para el "mtv-fashion-award". con mi sello bénédí, también he estado diseñando prendas listas para usar desde 2008, siempre inspirado en el balance entre la emotividad cubana y la objetividad alemana. fui seleccionado por la cámara de moda italiana (cámara nazionale della moda italiana) en 2009/10 entre los nuevos diseñadores más prometedores internacionalmente. Me siento satisfecho y agradecido de contar con tantas personas especiales entre mis clientes. // I come from a big cuban family that used to work in the textile business. so i grew up amongst lots of stuff from the fifties, old american fashion magazines and fading pattern sheets for dresses and pettycoats. that's probably why my great passion for fashion awoke early on. at the age of six i broke my mother's favorite dress into pieces, just to find out how it was made. Of course I sewed it together again – my poor mum was not at all happy about it. that later changed thank god, when I won several national awards and international fashion design competitions in the mid-1990s and eventually became the designer in chief in the fashion house "la maison" in havana, the most important fashion institution in cuba. In order to be able to orientate my career internationally, I went to europe in 1999. here I worked freelance for various fashion houses. then my best friend, jorge gonzález, invited me to hamburg. I immediately liked the city very much and I decided to stay and, together with volker krüger, start my label bénédí couture. in 2005, I won the prestigious "bunte-new-faces-award" and was nominated for the "mtv-fashion-award". with my label bénédí, I am designing ready-to-wear since 2008, playing always with the tension between cuban emoción and german rationality. the italian fashion chamber (camera nazionale della moda italiana) choose me 2009/10 amongst the most promising fashion newcomers worldwide. I am pleased that I can count some very special people amongst my customers.
